Guerrilla Professional Development: Put Collaboration to Work for You and Your Library!

While at the 2014 PLA Conference in Indianapolis, I participated in the first iteration of the Spark Talks session. Spark Talkers were selected to share brief, 5-minute presentations with slides on an interesting topic pertinent to public librarianship. I talked about guerrilla professional development–mining the talent that exists in-house in order to host trainings that are relevant to the jobs staff do; empower because they encourage staff to use and share their expertise; and much, much cheaper than the traditional top-down, “expert” trainer models that libraries are used to using.
